This coming Sunday, September 16, is Rwanda Partnership Sunday where we celebrate our partnership with our Presbyterian brethren in Gitarama Presbytery in Rwanda. Both sides of the partnership will celebrate the same liturgy on the same Sunday. We also will have displays, decorations and a reception open to all who wish to attend.
This is an important event in the life of our church as it marks a more than ten-year relationship with our sister church Nyarubuye Mpushi Church in Rwanda (Africa). The partnership was born out of a commitment by the Presbyterian Church (USA) to assist with a project to help foster reconciliation, peace and forgiveness through the churches of Rwanda following the 1994 genocide, when an estimated 800,000 people were murdered in a traumatic political event that had neighbor killing neighbor.
In 2014, we completed a ten-year project entitled Mission: Rwanda 2014. It was an exciting three-phase project to (1) provide 36 members families of Nyarubuye Mpushi Church with one heifer each, (2) assist with the building of a new church, and (3) assist with the expenses for one Calvary member to travel to Rwanda for a short-term mission project.
A second Rwandan Mission work trip was completed in 2016 as a part of a Kiskiminetas Presbytery project and it doubled as both a celebration of ten years and a work trip for preliminary work on a Presbytery church/office.
We also have supported water well projects, provided a handmade church banner and sent dresses and shorts through Little Dresses for Africa.
Today, members of Calvary are once again sewing little dresses in assorted sizes and colors to be sent to Rwanda in October.
We will be sharing more information about the service later this week, but hope you will mark your calendars for this special worship service and celebration.
