Worship Service – World Communion Sunday
Sunday October 6, 2019 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
World Communion Sunday is observed by many Christian churches globally and takes place on the first Sunday of October. It promotes Christian unity and ecumenicalism. The celebration originated in 1933 among a group of people at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. 1933 was a very bleak year with the Great Depression. On the near horizon, the dark clouds of Nazism hovered over Europe and threatened the entire world. The prevailing mood was anxiety and fear about economics, politics, and the future.
We will observe World Communion Sunday with the Sacrament of Holy Communion, a reading from Matthew 25:31-46 and the sermon “Struggling with Scripture: Judgement.”
We consider one of the most profound passages in Matthew’s Gospel. Understanding what Matthew 25:31-46 means is critical to our Christian living. Here’s the question: how do we relate to the least ones – the hungry one and the thirsty one, the poor one and the strange one, the sick one and the imprisoned one. How did Jesus?
All are welcome to join us for worship, which includes contributions from members and clergy alike who lead us in a weekly expression of our faith.
