Sunday September 15, 2019 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
All are welcome to join us for worship, which includes contributions from members and clergy alike who lead us in a weekly expression of our faith.
This week we begin a new sermon series entitled “Struggling with Scripture.”
The Bible is a library of ancient books that have been written over hundreds of years in various historical and cultural contexts. So how do we read it 2,000 years later in a world the Biblical writers could not have imagined? Given all of that, it is easy to misinterpret the Bible because the difference between what it says and what it means can lead to misunderstandings. These misunderstandings can make the Bible more challenging to trust, more difficult to see its current-day relevancy.
In our sermon series we will explore some tricky texts and see if, together, we can build bridges between what is says and what it means.
This week’s worship will include a reading from 1 Timothy 2:8-15 and the sermon “Struggling with Scripture: Women Keep Silent.”
In 1 Timothy 2:11, Paul writes, “Let a woman learn in silence with full submission.” This is a painful passage because these words have been used by the church to ignore and oppress women. What can we learn from this?
Rev. David J. Hanna will be preaching.
