This week, the fourth Sunday in Lent, our 11:00 a.m. worship service will include warm greetings, fine music, a children’s talk, prayer, a reading from Mark 9:14-29 and the sermon “Clay Jars: Belief and Unbelief”
In Mark 9:24, we find these prayerful words: “I believe; help my unbelief!” It’s about a father and his sick child. It’s about a father and the honesty of his faith, which reveals the treasure and the clay, and the tension between the two. When we fail to live up to the teachings of our faith, we provide a poor witness to the love of God we know in Jesus Christ. Having stated that, I believe we all suffer a gap between the calling of our faith and the living of our lives because being Christian is a mixture of “I believe; help my unbelief.”
Rev. David J. Hanna will be preaching.
Following the service we welcome all to join us in the Chalice Room next to the Sanctuary for refreshments and fellowship.
About the Lent Sermon Series “Clay Jars”
The series that comes from the Apostle Paul’s statement, “But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). During this Lenten season we will ponder Paul’s wisdom that failure and weakness, hurt and brokenness are not signs of God’s absence, but often prove to be the places where the light shines. This truth is this: We are vessels of God’s love.
The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days — like the flood of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah’s call to Ninevah to repent and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness.
