Calvary Presbyterian Church is embarking on its third Little Dresses for Africa project. This year, members and friends of Calvary Presbyterian Church will sew dresses May through September. Included in the project will also be some Little Britches for boys.
Anyone who likes to sew, whether a Calvary member or not, is welcome to become involved. The patterns are easy to follow, so you may work at your own convenience.
Over the years, Calvary has sent over 300 dresses and 50 pairs of shorts to the Little Dresses for Africa project which is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Christian organization that collects simple little dresses (made mostly of pillowcases or cotton fabric) and little shorts and distributes them through orphanages, churches and villages in Africa. The organization likes to say, “We’re not just sending dresses, we’re sending hope.”
The national program has distributed over 160,000 dresses in 16 countries of Africa, as well as other countries such as Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.
Kits may be picked up after the Sunday 11 a.m. service or during the week on the Mission Table in the Chalice Room.
Please sign the list when you take kits. The kits are marked with a size and the fabric is pre-cut to that size. Included in the kits are elastic and extra-wde bias binding. Extra trims have not been included in the kits; instead we urge you to allow your creative juices to flow and pick your own sew-on trims and ribbons from the baskets on the table. A few Little Shorts kits are now available and more will come. Help yourself. Finished dresses and shorts are due back by August 25.
If you are not a member, and are interested in participation, please call Rebecca Becker at (724) 463-9197 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange to pick up a kit and directions to get started.
