Circle 6 Woman’s Ministry
Circle Six at Calvary Presbyterian Church started in the 1980s when Associate Pastor Elizabeth Rogers selected a number of women to participate in a study group for Pittsburgh Theological Seminary doctoral student, Suzanne Hewitt. Each took a pretest, met monthly for a year to work with the curriculum Suzanne prepared, then took a post test. The final weekend was a retreat at Suzanne’s vacation home on Lake Chautauqua. The women enjoyed each other so much that we decided to become a permanent group as part of the Calvary Presbyterian Women’s Association. At the time the women’s groups were identified by numbers thus the name “Circle Six”. We have been meeting the second Monday of the month ever since.
Circle Six has studied a variety of material at the monthly meetings including books by Sister Joan Chittister, Joyce Rupp, “Faith and Reason” panel discussion videos, and bible study guides from Presbyterian Women. During the summer months we meet for dinner and fellowship at local eateries. Every Christmas we develop a service project. New members are always welcome.
Saturday Club
The Saturday Club is an organization for Calvary church members that dates back at least 65 years. It was originally known as “The Couples Club”, which later became “The Pairs and Spares”. After a hiatus of several years, it started up again 13 years ago as “Almost Seniors.” It is now known as The Saturday Club. Whatever the name, the purpose has remained the same; that of providing a social gathering opportunity for Calvary church members on the third Saturday of the month. There are no officers, no dues, no treasury and no membership roster. All church members and friends are invited to attend. Light refreshments are generally served and are followed by a program that might be entertaining, inspirational, or educational, but always, we hope, enjoyable.
