Forty or four hundred
We’ve all seen the news depicting hundreds of cars lined up for food in larger cities. Let’s consider an effort closer to home: small, yes, but no less important. It was interesting to take part in the process of carrying out a drive-through food giveaway at Arcadia Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Norma Duck. It took eight volunteers, all decked out with masks and gloves, from start to finish for the preparation day on April 7, and then the actual April 14 event. Don and Becky Becker volunteered to help the tiny congregation, made up mostly of senior citizens.
Why two days?
The first day is focused on preparing bags of food that actually come from the Arcadia Food Pantry. The day of the giveaway starts at 8 a.m. when the ICCAP truck arrives with boxes of food that slide down a ramp from the truck into the Arcadia Church basement. From 9 – 11 a.m. this food is sorted out into stacks for a “mass production” effort. Volunteers go through a buffet line picking up 20 different items contributed by ICCAP. The volunteers, working in pairs, with one person picking up one of everything then the second person in the pair, packing and checking the bags.
At eleven a.m. we stopped for a quick lunch, provided by ICCAP through Norma. After lunch we staged the various bags and boxes outside on long tables, on the sunny but chilly day. Everyone had a job, whether it was directing traffic, loading trunks or replenishing the tables with more food from inside. One car at a time drove in and popped their trunk. Volunteers loaded the bags of 20 items and a box containing fruits and vegetables from ICCAP, Arcadia’s Food Bank’s bags, and two rolls of toilet paper. Families with five or more members received double everything. No one was required to leave their car.
We served forty families!
Congratulations to Arcadia on a great effort; Calvary can be very happy about our partnership with Arcadia Presbyterian Church! A bonus for Don Becker was receiving a history of the town of Arcadia from one of our new friends.
