An anthem written by local musician, Daniel Perlongo, emeritus professor of theory and composition at IUP will be premiered at Calvary Presbyterian Church this Sunday, May 12.
Mr. Perlongo and his music have received acclaim and awards both in this country and abroad.
Of this musical composition, Mr. Perlongo writes:
“Sing a New Song” is an anthem for chorus, organ, and piano, inspired by Psalm 96, is song that reflects the arrival of spring and the resonant beauty of nature and countryside awakening around our home near Yellow Creek.
Another inspirational reference in composing the anthem was a marble sculpture of Luca della Robbia, made for the organ loft of the cathedral in Florence, Italy. I have long wanted to depict the music, singing, and dancing to Psalms in “praise of the Lord” found in this wonderful sculpture.
The anthem will be presented at the 11:00 a.m. service by the Chancel Choir directed by Dr. Joseph Baunoch, with Dr. Susan Wheatley at the piano and Roberta Jones at the organ. We are honored by Mr. Pelongo’s writing a piece for Calvary Church and welcome all to join us in this special worship service.
